Digging Ditches

From April: This is a guest post from my friend Jason Wert. Jason and I met a couple of years ago through blogs and I am proud to call him a friend of mine today. His posts always hit close to home and he is a huge encourager. He has two young boys who are the light of his life. You can find more of Jason’s writing over at Mustard Seed Year. I am grateful to have Jason posting today.

None of us want to be the one digging ditches.

We don’t want to be the ones that are cleaning toilets.

Running a jackhammer in the blazing summer sun.

No, what we want is for God to bring us into a dreamland where we get our dream job doing exactly what we want to do, when we want to do it and in a way that gets everyone to look at us.

The issue is that God doesn’t have everyone as the one standing on the platform in a church with 5,000 people.

God may want you working with a road construction crew so your co-workers can see you acting in a manner that reflects Christ.

God may want you slinging coffee in a café so you can talk to the girl that comes in alone every evening just wanting someone to show that she matters to them.

You may think that you’re not doing anything significant and completely irrelevant to the cause of Christ.  You may think that you’re in a place where you’re not learning anything or growing at all in the Lord.

But remember that after David was anointed king over Israel he went back to shoveling sheep poo in the fields.

It may not be enjoyable where God has you right now.  It might not be what you want to be doing, where you want to be or who you want to be around in life.

But God does have a plan.

And He does know the desires of your heart.

And if you’re faithful in the little things, He will give you a chance to be faithful with more things…

Great reminder and post. I think that’s one of the problems facing our society today. Everyone wants to start at the top, the problem is starting at the top will give us no understanding of the things that will be necessary in between; that thing called wisdom.

    Nice job Jason.
